life is drag.

The drag scene may not be well known to many Memphians, but to some, it is their whole life.

“As somebody who has lived a life of sexual assault, and I am currently battling cancer, when you are given an opportunity to do something you love, you have to jump at it, you have to take it,” said Lacey Drawers, who has been a drag queen for thirteen years.

People may have different ideas about drag queens, but many do not know what is going on behind the scenes. Drag shows are not always about queens getting up on stage to perform for an audience, it often goes much deeper than that.

Drag has saved me at such a dark time in my life that it sounds dark, and it goes to more of a dark place, but I don’t know if I can keep going in this world without it," said Mary Gagz, Bar DKDC Drag Show Host.

Drag queens push any differences they may have aside and treat each other like family. For some, this is the only family they have and the reason they keep going day by day.
